Home Maker vs. Wage Earner

  • Posted

Whilst society nowadays has departed from the traditional set up of the stay at home wife and the husband as the breadwinner the courts still recognise these traditional roles and most importantly do not discriminate against either role.

Whether the spouse is the wage earner or the home-maker both contributions will be viewed as equal. In a recent case the wife who was predominantly the home maker and former spouse of an oil and gas trader was awarded £453m this is one of the largest settlements ever ordered before the UK courts.

The marital assets were worth in total £1bn and the judge stated that the couples wealth had accumulated throughout the marriage through “equal contributions to the family welfare..” This case is one of many that evidences that UK courts do not discriminate against the financially weaker spouse.
