Dependents Of Adopted Adults Now Able To Trace Family Trees
Under new regulations due to come into force in November 2014, the children, grandchildren and other prescribed relatives of adopted adults will have the right to apply for information about their family history.
This will enable them to make contact with family members that they did not know about through intermediary services or to obtain information about any genetic medical conditions which could significantly impact their lives.
Immediate birth relatives (such as siblings) already have this right under the previous regulations.
The adopted person’s consent will be required apart from in limited circumstances in order to ensure that their right to a private life is protected.
